It’s a Platypus … in the wild

A series of shots of an Australian Platypus.

These animals are extremely shy. I couldn’t believe my luck when this one just appeared. I knew it existed but I’d never seen it so close before. It lives in the lagoon, literally just over the track from my front door. I’d had a large glass of wine and gone outside with my camera to enjoy the evening.

It all happened so quickly….. and then he just disappeared under the water.

Great Cormorants

These birds were lined up along the edge of rocks. Every now and then one would lean into the water and grab a fish.

This one suddenly got the urge to leap into the water, catch a fish and then fall back into line along the edge of the rocks.

Taken today

Today was hot and humid. Most of the wildlife was quietly at rest, finding places to cool off. The pelican seemed happy just to cool off in the shallows.

It took me a while to realise this cockatoo was sitting above in the leaves just keeping an eye on me.

The duck also happy to sit around in the lagoon.

The turtle was just surfing, waiting for a wave that wouldn’t eventuate.

The hawk was just not bothered and keeping a wary eye out.

For the Cosmic Photo Challenge

I might be entering a new photo phase, arty shots. I was playing around with a picture of the the palm tree out front of the house and this is the result. I must take a realistic photo for comparison, but this is a fun shot.

Fiddling with Fotos

I saw a much better shot of this flower and realised that it was growing in a dilapidated part of my garden. I enjoyed experimenting with different angles. This is the result.

  1. Just cropped to fit.

2. Darker edges and I tried to emphasise the curves.

3. It got wet. I needed to do more with the drops!

4. I ended up liking this shot most. It’s quite unnatural this way. The flower should probably droop downwards.

The light was on the right hand side and the photo was rotated. I liked the angles…

I’ve forgotten what the name of this flower is. It’s quite common and thrives with neglect. Please help out.

Eye spy

Eye spy with my little eye, something hiding in a burrow.

No, don’t notice me. Maybe if I stay here really still I’ll be safe.

Or maybe not!

Bee-eaters in the air

I finally managed to capture a bee-eater in flight. These two got my attention. One would fly off, presumably to catch a bug, and then return to the other. Maybe it was feeding it because they seemed to share the food. After a while I realised that if I just waited and held my breath, with my finger on the button, eventually I might be able to catch one in flight.

Needless to say, I have many pics of a single bird, having been too slow or simply missing my chance. But I’m so pleased to have these.
